once upon a time… or what we will tell our children about social media

August 14, 2011

the year is 2030 or so. on a lovely sunday afternoon we’re sitting together with our families. all of a sudden one of our children or grandchildren says, ‘could you please explain what social media was all about back in the days when you were young?’. bummer! that’s a good question!

after careful consideration you come up with the following 10 statements:

  1. once upon a time we decided that exchanging emails or text messages and making phone calls is not social enough. everyone was eagerly demanding a new technology to get closer to all of our friends, family members, colleagues and even former class mates.
  2. once upon a time we were signing up for the latest and greatest social media network and sending out friendship requests to almost everyone we knew. with every friendship confirmation we felt more and more connected and thus more and more social.
  3. once upon a time, unfortunately, we had to repeat step 2 every other year whenever a brand-new social network site promised us to take better care of our social needs and to get us yet closer to our friends. so we happily exchanged friendship requests again with pretty much the same bunch of people as we did during the last big social wave.
  4. once upon a time we did no longer bother of whom we were talking to. didn’t it feel way more social to tell everyone what’s going on rather than just one or two close friends? life just got so much easier without having to tell one and the same story over and over again.
  5. once upon a time we payed close attention to limit everything we wanted to say to less than 140 characters. otherwise we risked to exceed the average attention span of our beloved social friends. luckily, most of the social networks didn’t support updates above this limit anyway.
  6. once upon a time our cell phones became so abundant because of the missing need of making phone calls, that we decided to use them as our 24/7 access to social media regardless of any time and place. that way we were able to keep in touch with our social friends even in the unlikely event of an actual physical meeting.
  7. once upon a time former status symbols like cars, watches and fashion brands became totally unimportant. the overall amount of friends and followers solely defined who you are. just one look at the little number on your profile page revealed everything about you.
  8. once upon a time we were all excited about tiny little buttons that reduced our feedback options down to ‘like’ and ‘i don’t give a ****’. there was nothing in between. there was nothing more to say. social acceptance never got easier.
  9. once upon a time we couldn’t imagine our social life without social networks.
  10. once upon a time we were wondering what to tell our kids 20 years from now about social media.

what will you tell? could you just share it with everyone? i’m sure they’re gonna like it!

at the final destination or ‘i’m in miami b##ch’

July 27, 2010

finally our one of a kind into the south road trip will be coming to an end shortly. after yet another easy ride down on I-95 you will reach our final destination. if you were following us that far, your car’s odometer will show you something between 1700 and 1800 miles (2700 and 2900 km). nevertheless, this destination will be a great relief for all the time you spend on the steering wheel: welcome to the heat of Miami, FL!

actually, there’s not that much that needs to be said about this town. you’ll easily get around here and figure out where the hot spots are – and i really mean ‘hot spots’! first and foremost everybody’s hanging out on south beach with its famous art deco district and the legendary ocean drive. i’ve rarely seen a higher density of super luxury cars anywhere else… don’t miss to spend an afternoon at the beach and get dressed to impress for a dinner at one of the ocean drive restaurants. you might have enjoyed better food before, but it’s definitely worth to sit there for people watching! you’ll know what i’m talking about right from the very moment you get there:) after all consider carefully where you want to stay at night, don’t expect to sleep a lot in one of those art deco hotels…

i also recommend to visit downtown miami preferably at night when the skyline looks amazing. there’re also some great clubs downtown where you can see how the locals like to party! unfortunately, the music is not always quite the same like it is during the winter music conference, but you gonna have a good time anyways.

well, this is it! you made it! as a matter of fact some people say that you are a real american now after finishing this tour. we definitely had a blast in the southern states and met a lot of really nice people, not to mention the beautiful weather and all those great places to see. i truly recommend this tour or at least some of its stages to everyone visiting or living in the US.

let’s get into the south! bon voyage!

the beautiful south

July 27, 2010

part III of our into the south trip will take you to Charleston, SC and the south-eastern coast of the united states. i must admit that i had neither heard the name of this little city nor anything related to its history before our departure. however, it turned out to be one of the most worth seeing places of our trip. i’d actually go that far to say that this place should be triple-A rated in all US tourist guide books!

if you’re one of those people complaining about the lack of historical places in the US, charleston is for you. furthermore, if you think US architecture only consists of skyscrapers and prefabricated houses, again charleston is for you. finally if you enjoy strolling along little cobblestone roads and walking into picturesque old buildings and public parks, again charleston is for you. after all it doesn’t matter if you prefer a guided tour or just want to find your own way through this town. you’ll easily explore the beauty of the south.

before you finally get on I-95 towards the final destination of our trip you should not forget to make another little detour and visit the old sheldon church ruins, the city of Savannah, GA as well as tybee island.

part IV coming up soon… i’ll see you in miami b##ch!

400 miles to graceland

July 23, 2010

part II of the into the south travel report will take you to several remarkable places that are very well known to people around the world. we are going to start with the city of Memphis, TN which lies about 400 miles north of new orleans and whose residents and visitors basically had a major impact on history of the 20th century.

i must admit that it wasn’t really memphis that draw out attention to this area at first. it rather was one particular person we didn’t want to miss on our southern tour. as a matter of fact most people think this person passed away more than 30 years ago. but if you’ve ever made it to the glorious graceland, you know that elvis is still there! seriously, as cheesy as this place looks like at first sight, it’s definitely great fun to walk through his one of a kind mansion an stroll along a never ending hallway of  golden records. the king’s alive, baby!

after getting all shook up it’s time to move on to downtown memphis where you can explore a lot of nice bars and clubs around beale street. just don’t say afterwards i didn’t warn you of the spare ribs…

before leaving memphis you definitely have to stop by at the national civil rights museum to learn something about US history and the city’s most prominent visitor Martin Luther King Jr. like a good friend of mine said, ‘from him to obama in approx. 50 years is remarkable and says a lot about this wonderful country’.

after another 400 miles in south-eastern direction you will hit the city of atlanta. it’s actually a kind of funny to approach the city for the very first time on the street after visiting the airport more than a dozen times. if you’re arriving downtown late in the evening i recommend dinner at ted’s montana grill followed by a drink or two at the sun dial bar on top of the city. the next day is going to be great entertainment. after a walk through the centennial olympic park you arrive at the georgia aquarium and the famous world of coca cola. even if you’re not a big coke supporter, i’d ask everyone interested in marketing to visit this state of the art exhibition of the world’s best-known brand! don’t miss the photo shooting with the ice bear and the tasting of more than 60 coca cola products: ‘it’s gonna be a fun ride home!’:)

if you read that far, you’ve already made it deep into the south. moving on in eastern direction we’ll be arriving shortly in south carolina. stay tuned for part III.

NOLA

July 23, 2010

this is going to be the first out of four posts summarizing a one of a kind tour (into the south) through the southern states of the US. the first stop will bring you to the city of New Orleans, LA (NOLA).

how do you know right after your arrival at the airport that this place is different? maybe it’s because of the taxi driver who introduces himself as ‘captain al jackson’ and has been on duty for the last 43 years. maybe it’s because of all those street musicians who contribute to the city’s truly unique spirit. or maybe it’s because of everyone living in this city who will never surrender despite devastating hurricanes and environmental disasters.

above all this city has so much to give. every tourist guide book will direct you to the french quarter at the very heart of the city and that’s actually the best place to start with. to put it in a nutshell, i recommend strolling around jackson square and royal street to experience the lovely artwork and nice buildings in this area. if you’re up for some mardi gras souvenirs you should browse through the french market which might be much cheaper than all the typical tourist shops. i also recommend the katrina+5 exhibit at the historic new orleans collection. however, be warned: there’s a reason why they offer tissues for free within their exhibition rooms. finally indulge yourself in one out of many authentic restaurants. of course there’re several tourist traps but we really enjoyed our dinners at the gumbo shop (southern) and at domenica (italian). late at night you can explore the craziness around bourbon street or enjoy excellent live music at frenchmen street. the latter definitely is an insiders’ tip. you won’t be disappointed!

so whatever brings you to NOLA, enjoy the vibe of the city and get into the groove of mardi gras, jazz and blues.
